About us
Born from the creative community we serve, we empower artists and innovators through personalized banking solutions, community support, and a shared passion for creative excellence.
From creative beginnings to a stronger future
Back in 2008, we began as Creative Arts Savings and Credit Union — a small but passionate community of 279 members and $4 million in assets. From day one, our goal was simple: to celebrate and support the unique financial needs of the creative arts community. Thanks to the trust and enthusiasm of our members, we grew and flourished over the years, expanding our reach while staying true to our creative roots.
In 2020, our members voted overwhelmingly to join forces with FirstOntario Credit Union — one of Ontario’s largest and most respected credit unions. With more than 85 years of experience serving members across the Golden Horseshoe, Niagara, and Southwestern Ontario, FirstOntario shares our commitment to exceptional service, innovation, and community.
Together, we became Creative Arts Financial, a division of FirstOntario Credit Union — continuing our mission to support and inspire the creative community we call home.

What makes Creative Arts Financial a strong choice for creatives and gig workers?
Creative Arts Financial is designed for the creative community, supporting actors, freelancers, and independent contractors who work with irregular income. Members benefit from competitive rates, lower fees, and flexible support built around careers that do not follow a traditional schedule. With in-person service, online and mobile banking, and a wide network of surcharge-free ATMs, Creative Arts Financial keeps your money accessible wherever work takes you.
What features should gig workers look for in a bank account?
Gig workers need banking that’s simple, affordable, and easy to manage. Low or no fees, fast e-Transfers, and efficient online banking are essential for staying organized. Clear transaction history helps track income and expenses, and responsive customer support matters when questions arise. Creative Arts Financial provides all these features, along with free high-interest savings accounts and reliable digital banking, making it a practical choice for anyone with irregular income.
I have irregular income. Which account setup works best for gig workers?
Financial experts often recommend a two-account system for freelancers and gig workers. Start with a primary chequing account for payments and everyday expenses. Add a separate savings account to hold tax funds and other required payments. Creative Arts Financial offers free savings accounts with great rates, making it easier to stay organized. Many gig workers also open a business account for billing. This simple structure stabilizes cash flow and improves record keeping throughout the year.
What should gig workers consider before applying for credit or loans?
Creative Arts Financial understands the irregular nature of gig work and offers competitive rates on loans, mortgages, and lines of credit. To strengthen a credit application, gig workers should maintain clear income records, keep consistent deposits, and protect their personal credit, since lenders look for stable financial habits even when income varies. Creative Arts Financial reviews each member’s situation individually and provides custom solutions. Steady account activity and organized records help build reliability and improve borrowing options.
Do freelancers or sole proprietors need a business account?
Freelancers who are not incorporated are not required to open a business account but separating personal and business finances is highly beneficial. Using a dedicated account for freelance income and expenses creates cleaner records, simplifies tax reporting, and reduces confusion at year end. It also provides a clearer picture of how the business is performing. Many gig workers choose a business account because it improves organization and supports long term financial planning.
